Handbook of Mobile Learning

Ryan Seilhamer, Baiyun Chen, and Amy Sugar of the UCF Mobile Initiative Team have published a chapter in the Handbook of Mobile Learning by Routledge. The chapter is titled “Framework for Implementing Mobile Technology” and is an overview of UCF’s implementation of the Blackboard Mobile Learn app in 2011.

In this chapter, we outline the systematic approach to successfully implement a mobile technology at the University of Central Florida (UCF). The developed mobile implementation framework provides scalable solutions to plan, test, and implement a mobile technology on a campus, considering the student and instructor perspective, impact on infrastructure, and technical support across the university. Following a brief background of mobile initiatives in higher education, we discuss the mobile implementation framework, share lessons learned during each phase, and discuss the results of our pilot study. Finally, we summarize our findings and call for future research on this mobile implementation framework at the institutional level.
